Attendance

and pupil safety

It is essential that we know the whereabouts of every student and so it is important that parents or caregivers contact us if a student is to be absent for any reason.

There is a number of ways to inform the school that a student is going to absent from school either fill out the absent form on this page, phone and leave a message or email the school – please remember to state students name, homeroom number and reason for absence.

If you don’t contact us we will try to reach your family by telephone.

Our

Dress Code

In consultation with parents, a functional and attractive uniform has been selected to give our pupils a sense of belonging and pride.

We insist that:

High standards of dress are maintained and that pupils wear the correct uniform every day.

Our pupils are clean and tidy

All clothing is named. This makes returning misplaced items much easier.

Jewellery is confined to a wristwatch and one stud per ear for boys and girls.

Please note that rings and dangling earrings are potentially dangerous and are thus prohibited.

Pupils do not wear make-up, fingernail polish or hair products, nor should they tint or dye their hair.

Long hair should be tied back and plaited for health and safety reasons.

Cell Phone

Policy

Cell phones are not a learning device at Whanganui Intermediate School. They are a distraction from learning but we acknowledge the need for many students to have them for before and after school communication with whanau.

Our policy states

  1. Students are to hand their cell phones to their ‘Homeroom’ teacher at the beginning of the day.
  2. Each ‘Homeroom’ teacher is able to lock cell phones in a secure safe box.
  3. Cell phones will be returned to students at the end of the day.

If a student is found in possession of a cell phone during the day it will be taken from them and sent to the school office for safekeeping until the end of the week. In this case, a parent/caregiver is required to pick it up.
